Solon Brochado: With the announcement of the official result of the referendum (63.94% of valid votes against the prohibition on the commerce of firearms and ammunition), some supporters of the “no” vote decided to hold a celebration in the streets of Rio de Janeiro.

What started as a celebration, though, turned into a confrontation after “yes” supporters started cursing the demonstrators, and threatened to throw a rock at a car carrying “no” paraphernalia. I guess it’s a good thing the lady with the rock was in favor of banning guns, and didn’t believe in violence as a way of solving anything.

“No” and “yes” supporters face off in Rio

Supporters of the “no” and “yes” campaigns over the ban on the commerce of firearms had a confrontation this tuesday afternoon in the streets of Rio de Janeiro. There are no reports of injuries. Today [Tuesday], the Tribunal Superior Eleitoral announced the end of the vote polling for the referendum on the subject held last sunday. Those contrary to the prohibition won with 63.94% of valid votes.

A woman started throwing rocks at a “no” campaign car, that was covered with ribbons and Brazil flags during a celebration held by voters against the prohibition in the city’s downtown. From the sidewalk, the woman yelled and cursed the demonstrators, who fought back. Moments later, a “no” supporter tried to restrain the woman and they ended up in a fistfight.
